The spirit of the law is more important in scripture than the letter. Jesus came into the world and was seen as a law breaker.
In what way did he break the law? Well he did not follow the rules in a mindless thoughtless way as leaders expected him too. Was this really law breaking, NO!
In reality God has always wished to be worshiped in spirit and truth. It is not as if the commandments of God are not real, but behind their reality are deeper principles.
When David was on the run he ate from the bread which only the priests were to eat. Was this wrong, no, based on the situation it is the heart of scripture.
